Major victory for FPU’s project in Romania: Joins international organization for cabin crew

FPU Romania has officially become a member of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), which works to improve conditions for cabin crew.

FPU Romania has joined ITF, the global trade union for transport workers. The membership is a sign of international recognition for FPU Romania, which was founded with support from the Danish union FPU back in 2020.

So explains Anders Mark Jensen, Vice Chairman of FPU and Chairman of the Board of FPU Romania.

“It is a huge victory for our Romanian members that they are now also represented in an international organization for cabin crew. At the same time, it is a stamp of approval for the great work FPU Romania is doing to improve working conditions for employees in Eastern European aviation.”

FPU Romania became a member of ECA, the European Cockpit Association, in 2023. In recent years, the Romanian trade union has negotiated collective agreements for both pilots and cabin crew at Ryanair and has won a series of legal cases against Wizz Air.

FPU Romania: Look forward to collaboration

Membership also brings great joy to Mircea Constantin, General Secretary of FPU Romania.

“We are thrilled to finally be part of ITF and are happy to share this fantastic news with our members. It is a long-awaited step that we have been working toward for many years,” says Mircea Constantin.

Why is it important for FPU Romania to join ITF?

“Being part of ITF means gaining international recognition as an organization. We now look forward to strengthening our representation both in Romania and internationally through collaboration with ITF and its member unions.”

Mircea Constantin explains that FPU Romania’s members currently face a variety of challenges.

“It depends a lot on the airline that they work for. For example, our Wizz Air members need support to finally be recognized for their union affiliation and a CLA must be put in place very soon. For our members in the ACMI operations, the atypical employment contracts are something to work on. And for our Ryanair members, we are in the negotiating process of renewing their CLAs.”
